Do they try and sell you stuff (books and other "must haves") and what is the over all atmosphere? I am going to be doing the pay as you go thingy with free registration…thanks in advance

I know that you get weighed and everything to set a baseline, basically. But what else happens? Also, is it more fun to do it with a friend? Two other people are doing it with me and we are going to compete to see who loses the most weight. Does it keep you motivated to keep at it?
